Mini-Dynamo for Cell Phones

The SideWinder is a steal, especially on Amazon.com, and is invaluable for providing energy to power a cell phone when no power source is available. Coupled with a car phone charger, one will be ready for most likely any situation in which a phone must be charged. The SideWinder provides 6 minutes of talking time and up to 30 minutes of standby time after per 2 minutes of constant manual charging. A great device.

Perfect for backpacking

I've used the Gaiam SideWinder Cell Phone Charger for a couple of years now on a Motorola Razr phone. I'm currently trying to get an adaptor to work on my new phone.
The Sidewinder works perfectly for bicycle touring and backpacking. I only wish they had a bicycle generator model.

Very small and reasonably effective

I have had smartphones for the last 5 years. Battery technology is getting better, but you still need to charge your phone. I wanted something that was very small and thus portable and light. I also wanted something that would be reasonably effective at charging the phone.
This unit has an LED light on it, so it has that extra feature, which I have used several times. It does have some sort of circuit rectifier so that it provides the proper current to your phone regardless of which way you crank it.
You have to crank this thing for 15 mins or more to get any sort of useful charging accomplished. One of the disadvantages of the size is that your hand will cramp up. If you have arthritis, forget about this thing and go get an ETON radio.
I have found that it is hard to keep a constant voltage going with this tiny hand crank. As a result, my phone kept complaining about it being a non-standard charger and weird voltages. It probably makes the most sense to charge your phone with this while the phone is actually powered off. Given the fact that no one else has anything like this on the market, I think it's a good product for what it does. Consider this first generation at the portable hand-crank phone chargers. I'm sure in 5 years things will be better, but this is still a pretty good product now. Just be aware that you are best off to have the strategy to be cranking this while you are hiking through the woods. If you expect to sit down at the campfire and crank, you are going to be at it for an hour.
